Robberies of banks, savings and loans and credit unions decreased by nearly seven percent in the first quarter of 2011 as compared to the same period in 2010, according to the recently released FBI bank crimes statistics report.

The total number of robberies committed between January and March 2011 totaled 1,081, down from 1,160 during the same quarter last year.bank-teller

Here’s a quick look at some other interesting statistics from the report:

  • Cash losses totaled about $7.5 million – about 22 percent of which has been recovered by law enforcement agencies
  • Friday was the leading day for robberies
  • 9 -11 a.m. was the preferred time of attack
  • Acts of violence were committed in about four percent of the robberies, with employees suffering the most injuries
  • Bank robberies were most prevalent in the West
  • Branch offices were targeted nearly 47 times more often than main offices

This information should be of interest to bank security directors as they continue to plan for the security of their facilities.
