Recently, we hosted a Government Security Symposium in which a diverse mix of security industry experts shared insights and practical advice on major security issues, as well as strategies for evaluating, funding and deploying integrated identity management and network-centric physical security technologies. One session of note came from Jason Rosen, PSP EPACS Program Manager for NASA HQ.
Rosen’s presentation provided a few lessons learned for security experts to take into consideration when implementing an Enterprise Physical Access Control System (EPACS). These lessons included:
- Establishing Partnership: The CIO and Physical Security departments should be working together on this implementation.
- Operation and Maintenance with Vendor: Establish an operation and maintenance policy with vendor and meet frequently to ensure everything stays on track.
- Interoperability and Intraoperability: Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards and readers should be utilized to ensure information is shared to relevant parties.
